We are studying Mercury because it is one of the smallest planets, but one of the most dense so we want to answer many questions about its cores density. Scientists hope to learn why Mercury is so dense, what are the unusual materials at its poles, what's the structure of it's core, what's the nature of it's magnetic field, and what's it's geologic history.
I personally don't think that the U.S. government should not spend all this money studying other planets. Since the U.S. economy is not doing that well we should spend time improving our own country whether than trying to find out more stuff about the universe.
